What Is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring, also known as gum reshaping, is a dental procedure used to improve the shape and position of the gum line for a more balanced appearance. It is commonly performed to correct a “gummy smile,” where an excessive amount of gum tissue is visible when smiling, making the teeth appear shorter than they actually are. By removing and reshaping excess gum tissue, more of the natural tooth surface is revealed, helping create a more proportionate, attractive, and harmonious smile.

with Gum Contouring

Gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure that reshapes and adjusts the gum line to create a more balanced appearance. It is especially suitable for patients with a “gummy smile,” where excessive gum tissue makes the teeth appear short or disproportionate. By carefully reshaping the gums, more of the natural tooth surface is revealed, helping the teeth appear longer and better proportioned for a more confident and natural-looking smile.

How Many Gum-Contouring Methods Are Available?

The most suitable gum-contouring method depends on several factors, including the amount of gum tissue that needs to be removed, its position and thickness, the dentist’s expertise, and the technology available at the clinic. In general, there are two to three commonly used methods:

1. Laser Gingivectomy

This is a modern and widely used method that uses concentrated laser energy to gently remove excess gum tissue.

2. Scalpel Gingivectomy

This traditional technique uses a surgical scalpel to precisely cut and reshape excess gum tissue. Sutures may be required in some cases.

3. Electrosurgery

This technology-assisted method uses a high-frequency electrical current to cut and cauterise the gum tissue at the same time.
